Q&A with Chris Jaeger, Marketing to Brides Online

Q: Chris, we read a newsletter of yours back in the late Fall that mentioned Google was planning a Spring update to its algorithm. Sure enough, our site dropped out of three of the top ten keyword positions we’ve had for years! HELP. What do you think happened?

A: It’s hard to say. Did you make any significant changes at your website? Recently, a wedding vendor called me in a panic. They had dropped out of a very lucrative top ten position after being given bad advice about changes to their home page. Their “consultant” recommended they shorten up the page copy on their home page because “Brides don’t like to scroll web pages…” This is not correct and was some very bad advice. Google’s reaction to their new home page with less content and fewer relevant keyword phrases – loss of their top ten position.

If you did NOT make any changes to your home page give it another 30 days. If after 30 days you don’t get your position back (and BTW, this happens all the time when Google does an update), take a look at your competition. There’s a good chance someone bumped you out with a more relevant and better search optimized page.

Search optimization is no longer a do-it-yourself type thing. It’s far more sophisticated now and requires far more effort than a year or two ago. Add to that the competition which has increased 3 fold. You probably will need some expert support.
